The Theme For Tonight:

👉🏼 Turkey Rearing:

What you Need to Know and how to get started with the rearing and marketing of turkey to make a fantastic amount of income

🎤Speaker/facilitator

🗣Mr Ibrahim Odenike

Dear Friends,do you know that Turkey is called “Tolotolo in Nigeria????

This bird is farmers’ pride, easy to rear and very profitable as far as Nigerian market is concerned

Despite the ban on the importation of its meat, smugglers still brings it into the country. The activities of these smugglers and many turkey farmers in Nigeria can never satisfy the demands of the bird’s meat in present Nigeria

No doubt, there are many turkey farmers in Nigeria yet demand is larger than supply

Because of the incredible ‘high demand’ for turkey meat across the country, venturing into the turkey rearing business is a very profitable one

These are what you need before you begin Turkey farming business in Nigeria….

  1. A good pen
  2. Feeding trays
  3. Water troughs
  4. Morigad, as disinfectant against soldier ants and other unwanted pests.
  5. Feed, very important

Still using yesterday subdivisions

Let’s look at the topic as follows:

  1. Wetin Turkey be?
  2. The Genesis…
  3. On the field…
  4. The Daunting Risk.
  5. The Prosperous Feat.

Quick on…So, you don’t need a big, large or giant pen to start

Show these to any local carpenter, they can easily help you build any of the two

Do I have any followers at all?

As soon as you get your pen ready, egwala shop for the young one from a local sellers or order online

It’s not good to walk alone in this business. The larger we are the larger the return

Yeah, good…

If anyone has interest in buying or ready to stock, kindly contact me. I’ll link you with reliable seller. Only in Lagos, please🙏🙏🙏

The water trough and feeding trays you need depend on how many bird you intend to stock.
In fact, their feeding is very simple

Feeding is the most important aspect of Turkey farming. Carbohydrates and fats can increase the energy of fowl and they can get the correct amount of nutrients from a balanced ration of feeds. When the fowls are fed fat feeds, they can proportionally increase in size although their strength depends on the carbohydrate feed they consume. The larger the turkey is, the more the energy it will take to maintain the body and also to produce eggs.

I recommend that you get 0-5 or 0-7 weeks old
Please, do not get below this age.

The reason is that they must have completed necessary vaccination before you buy them for rearing.
Hope you get that?

It will also reduce your spending on vaccination and drug administration

Use wood shaving to cover the floor but….
As in…

The rudiments of the pen floor is the same as it is for Guinea Fowl

…you need to be changing the wood shaving to avoid soldier ants attack

You, Turkey cannot fight ant and chase snakes as Guinea fowl does, so you need to keep tidy environment

Now, let’s move to feeding…
Hybrid feeds is to fasten their growth and weight but not compulsory. Highly necessary for large scale Turkey farmers.

These are common feed for Turkey as a starter

Soybeans
Millet
Rice
Corn
Wheat (recommended)
Sorghum

You can also choose to give them the following as Supplementary Feeds
Onions
Watermelon
Egg shell grit (30-40 grams per bird occasionally)
Fish (both dried and fresh)

The following are Turkey
Hybrid Feeds
Turkey Starter’s mash (4-5 weeks old)
Turkey Grower’s mash (5-8 weeks old)
Turkey Finisher
Chicken feed

While stocking, get 2 males for 4 females

Turkey Farming: Risks Involved
If the poultry is not well protected, your biggest threat would be snakes that’ll keep eating the eggs or killing the fowls.
Soldier ants, bush rats, and other rodents can also be a threat to your turkey farming business.
Unhygienic poultry could lead to infections and the delicate part is that diseases spread faster amidst turkeys than most other poultry animals.
Improper feeding would make your turkeys less preferred to others from other farms, so you must be ready to spend on feeding.

Moving toward conclusion now…

For a start…
Let’s do a simple calculation
Let assume you want to start with 10 birds

A 4-7 weeks cost #1500 last market price.
That is, 1500×10
That is #15000, isn’t it?

You erect a simple pen that can contain 10 birds with buying of troughs and feeding tray cost #90000 (assumption, depends on the carpenter and area)

Feeding and vaccination for a farm year at #35000

In all we have, 15000+90000+35000= 140000
Is my calculation correct?

Now, the right market age for turkey is 16 weeks of age, that is 4 months. The Toms (males) should weigh 7.5 kg and the hens (females) should weigh 5.5 kg at that stage of rearing.

At the end of one farming year, you should have nothing less than 30 turkeys in your poultry farm, which if sold for N15,000 each when mature at the age stated above.

I’ll leave you with the calculation. Do the plus and minus and let’s see the outcome

Oh, I forget to mention the eggs. So sorry

Therefore, brothers and sisters, you do not need much to start. The little you have now is enough, start, take the bold step and begin to command your bank account as you wish
Thanks so much for your time. God bless you all

Therefore, the market is still open and wide….the time is now!

Alright, let me follow what Socrates said and I’ll use it to conclude my presentation tonight…

“I know that I am intelligent because I know nothing. True knowledge exists in knowing that you know nothing…”

Thanks and good night…✌✌✌
