Let’s commence tonight seminar

Goat farming business has become a bit common over the years in Nigeria.

The reasons are not far fetched, this is the result of goats’ ability to thrive in diverse conditions, their versatility in adapting to semi-arid, humid and cold mountain conditions.

Goat farming is a goldmine and we should not leave for the ill-equipped, rural farmers who might never do it on a large scale nor fully explore the profitable opportunities in the value chain.

In our world of today, your business goals as a goat farmer should be simple, data-driven and on a commercial scale where simple design systems and processes in-house explores the use of efficient technologies to simplify processes and boost your profits.

Investing in goat farming can transform your own personal economy by making that gradual shift away from subsistence farming into tech-driven, commercially-viable and profitable farming.

This approach to goat farming will help ensure food security and ensure every business cash flow lover within the goat farming value-chain become profitable in the long run.

Although the popularity of small ruminants, goats inclusive among rural households is high, small ruminant production systems receive little attention from the media when compared to cattle and other agricultural ventures. As a result, goats lag behind cattle in terms of numbers in Nigeria.

Goats are multi-purpose animals. So, you could produce milk, meat, skin, fiber, manure and many more from goats at the same time.

Strategically, you need to determine what type of products has a great demand in your location. So, if goat milk has a great demand in your location, then you can set up a dairy goat farming business, alongside your goat rearing business.

Also, if goat meat has a high demand, then you can easily establish goat farm with the clear cut decision to produce and package goat meat for your target market.

Before starting a goat farming business in Nigeria, you have to make sure you analyze the basic needs of your target market and start producing in-demand products.

Market Insight

With a current estimate of over 250 million people living in Nigeria, goat farming business remains a virtually untapped goldmine you could explore to solve your financial problems. Given the fact that there is a ready market (in Lagos State alone) for over 100, 000 goats every month. Goat farming beats all odds to being the most lucrative venture you can invest in to make money in 2020.

To operate a goat farm on a commercial scale and make money with it, you might need about more than 20 acres of land.

Next, you must decide to only rear the cross breeds that include the popular boar, the savanna, as well as the local good varieties commonly known as the West African dwarf (WAD).

Your main objective for this kind of farm would be to produce a large and a regular, good quality breeds of goats for sale.

Choosing a Goat Breed

You would need to buy a savanna goat breed since 1 male of the breed could give up to 50 female goats and at the end of 5 months you are going to be expecting to get over 70-100 kids and offspring as your profits.

Then, you do not need anything else. You just need to make sure you spread them and make sure they goats are de-wormed every after three months. You make sure that they are eating and getting vaccinated. The most critical resource in goat farming is finding farm land.

But if you can afford to have 2 or 3 acres, you can start up. How do you start after getting your 3 acres of farm land ? You need to set aside only 1 acre for the settlement of the goats.

Then, use a portion of the remaining 2 acres to plant your grasses and for the goat housing set up.

Then after 3 months, the grasses will be ready for consumption by the goats.

Hybrid Goats vs Local Goat Breed

The difference between the local goat breed and hybrids is in the conversion rate of the feeds or the growth rate.

If a local goat breed could grow, let’s say, 10 grams in a day. Then; a hybrid, savanna or boar could maximally put on 600 grams per day. A goat farmer who started his own goat farm with hybrid goats only needs eight months. This suggests that a hybrid will be bred each month.

Conversely, if you started your goat farm with local goat breed, you would need over three years to have a baby from a goat.

.Creating A Pasture For Your Goats

You will have to designate like 5-6 acres of land for Corris Guyana (a type of grass variety) the goats could easily feed on when you grow them. You could also cultivate sweet potatoes on some expanse of farm land. Sweet potatoes can be dried, chopped and added to the processed elephant grass to get silage for feeding your goats.

Feeding your Goats

Basically, you would be setting aside another 5-6 acres for a crop like like bananas plantation. The banana plantation is very useful because when harvesting of the banana bunches is completed, you could put the goats in the plantation so that they feed on the bananas plants.

Goat farmers prefer the dry seasons as opposed to the rainy seasons because goats perform better when fed mostly with some bits of dry matter in their feeds.

Making Silage for your Goats

You could even plant grasses deliberately to feed feed your goats when they are harvested. The technique for making a silage requires that you grow and harvest any type of grass that you know goats love eating.

Specifically, you could grow elephant grass. When the grasses are nearing maturity, they have to be cut and fermented to keep as much of its nutrients as possible. The grass is allowed to wilt in the open field to minimize its moisture content.

Next, the cut grasses have to be chopped and compacted to eliminate as much oxygen as possible.

Then, you have to seal the compacted grass in airtight plastic bags to keep out oxygen after the addition of molasses.

If well-preserved, you silage could last a whole year.

So, you do not need to move your flock from one place to another looking for pasture or spend money buying some packaged feed meals.

Moving livestock from one place to another is a BIG problem in Nigeria.

Incidentally, this approach to livestock farming will solve the problem 100%.

*Napier grasss is commonly called Elephannt gras in Nigeria.

Rearing Density

Within a 40-acre farm land, you should be able to raise over 400 goats. I mentioned such a large land expanse because goats like moving around a bit more.

Goats are space-loving and HATE being cramped up in a small space. They like to have enough space around so they could move without running into one another.

The advantage of this great feature about goats is that this helps to prevent the spread of certain communicable diseases.

Basically on a 1 acre farm, you could have a goat population of 10.

Reproduction in Goats

Goats multiply in a rather fast manner. Goats could give birth to single or multiple births.

Pregnancy in goats take up to 5 months before they give birth.

Next, you would set aside another two acres for your banana plantation. Also, you could use 1 acre to build 3 building structures.

Of these 3 structures, one would actually house the female weaners, another will house the male weaners and the last one would house the mother flock.

Goat Housing

Goat structure could be made out of the local materials which are strong enough to keep a maximum of 150 goats.

A new goat farmer should rather invest more in his stock than in an expensive housing.

A simple goat house should basically be able to keep your goats from excessive rainfall, coldness and, may be sunshine.

This kind of housing should provide your goats enough shelter from harsh weather conditions.

So briefly about the housing. Many farmers make this mistake with housing the goats in their farm. Goats do not really need a house , like the kind humans live in.

To make money with your goat farm business, you have to invest more in your goat stock, than investing in constructing a ‘techie’ house for your goats.

Goat Health Management

You need to consult a veterinary doctor to train you and your farm workers on the dealing with health issues that could come up.

Your need some special care and management for continuous maximum and profitable income.

For instance, you have to vaccinate your goats from time to time. You should put measures in place to prevent your goats from straying outside the farm area and you should make it a duty never to feed your goats with decayed foods.

Take special care to the breeding bucks and does.

Keep bucks and does separate from each other.

Take special care of the kids for few months.

Create a report for the total income and expenditures of your goat farm.

Marketing Mature Goats from Your Farm

You should do a very good marketing research before setting up your goat farm.

If your marketing research is thorough, you would be able to conclude on how your goats would be sold, when they would be ready to be sold, where they would be sold off and at what prices.

To really make more money with goats, you might need to group your target market into segments.

Below are examples of segments of your target market as as goat farmer:

*You could sell to the segment of your target market that would pay a premium price for healthy live goats.

*You could organize a directory of cafeterias where goats are slaughtered each day.

Contact them personally, strike a deal to supply them live goats at a very competitive price.

*You could run a butchery not too far from your goat farm. So in your butchery, you would slaughter goats sourced from your farm, slice the goat meat into regular shapes, package the goat meat, brand them, refrigerate then and do proper market distribution within Nigeria and to other countries.

There are still a lot more. But, for want of space. I would stop at this point.
