🎤SPEAKER/FACILITATOR/DISCUSSANT….
🗣 Mr Oluwashola Andrey Jesuseitan …
Good evening ladies and gentlemen
How has your day been sir/ma???
You all are welcome to Seminar for tonight…
I pray that your eyes of understanding maybe enlightened so as to be freed from the shackles of poverty….
Our topic for tonight is broken into Past , Present Future, Personal & Environmental or Associated
Past Reasons
The curriculum being used in most institutions of learning are outmoded
They were designed in the 18th century, when the industrial revolution was starting…
It was prepare for many students to serves as clerks and Officers/ supervisors in the industrial complex….
It is made worrisome in Nigeria due to the level of poverty…
Lecturers have been using the same textbooks and Tutorials for students since they began their sojourn as a graduate assistant..
.Only God knows when this was- the man is now a head of department or faculty dean..
What quality of graduates can such antiquated Prof or Dr. Produce….
Yet that is what obtains in most if not all our higher institution of learning in this country..
Present Conditions..
1) Due to the dysfunction and ill preparedness of our school systems
Graduate are not properly skilled for the workplace
2) Work places are looking for creative solutions providers
Not necessarily your professional certificates…
The reason certification gotten in Nigeria gives you access to the workplace anywhere in the world
But the certificated from the best Nigerian Universities are not
You will be asked to take/pass bridge exams before you can work in any abroad countries
3) Understand that the higher education qualification you have is a foundation for you to build upon it any structure of your choice…
The reason banks, consulting companies take any 1st or 2.1 or sometimes 2.2 class graduates
Take them through their own internal testing methods….
The testing always weed out rigid crammer’s from life long learners
Whom they know will be able to bring solutions to the many diverse challenges the company will face in the real world
3) FUTURE CHALLENGES…
a) The future of work is changing. More traditional job roles are being replaced by newer job descriptions
b)Mass Communicator Vs Social Media Influencer….
Medical Doctors Vs Telemedicine…
Bookshops Vs Ebooks…
Traditional Higher Schools of learning ( Harvard, Cambridge , MIT ) VS MOOCS ( Online cheaper schools)….
2) Long Tenure of study to get majors qualifications ( 4,5,6,7,years) are being replaced with shorter spanned micro certifications that fetch money immediately upon completion…
Law, Doctors, Engineer
Vs
Digital Marketer
Cyber security
Smart Cities Expert
Tele- Medicine etc
3) The rise of the Robots, Internet of Things, Artificial intelligence and Machine/ Deep Learning has Radically change the landscape of the workplace…
4) PERSONAL HANDICAPS…
a) Staying for a long time looking for a job
You are then tagged “no experience” and not fit for the workplace
Sometimes 3-7 years after graduation…
b) Inability to be adaptable to the needs of the workplace inspire of the course studied…
I studied History Arts at the University…
Before getting an MBA – a business degree…
Apart from many short courses that are targetted & focused for the workplace….
c) Pride and Arrogance
Carrying oneself higher than some jobs because we feel they are too menial for a university graduate…
But numbers don’t lie
A gokada driver earns average of 2-3k daily x 26 days = 78,000 averagely per month…
I heard of a man who does Asun – goatmeat barbeque..
He has 6 stalls ,where boys sells for him
He makes a profit of 6,000 per day x 6 shops x 30 days
Over a million naira….
Think about that🤷🏼‍♀🤷🏼‍♀🤷🏼‍♀
He wakes up late in the day
Goes to shop about 3.00pm…
Closes latest by 9.00-10.00pm….
5) ENVIRONMENTAL & ASSOCIATED Problems
a) Nigeria just came out of a recession a few years ago
Many workers were retrenched by many companies – big and small alike…
Therefore no new recruitment took place…
b) The rise of the smaller office powered by technology to deliver great results…
And more money/ revenue..
Amazon, Apple & Microsoft has surpassed 1Trillion dollars valuations…
Yet traditional multinational companies have never hit this exalted marks…
Think GE, Mobil, Chevron, Total, Coca Cola etc..
For your information these companies have around for over 100 years each in existence…
c) The rise of entrepreneur worker
He/she is driven by self actualization, rather than going to work for large corporations…
Societal problems interest him/ her…
Knowing that in providing solutions to such problems lies in his / her pathway to wealth, fame & establishment…
Amazon – Speed of delivery…
Google – Search…
Facebook – Community.
Instagram – Pictures and Videos…
WhatsApp – Chatting….
Mitigation Strategies…
Mitigation Strategies…
1) Lecturers need to upgrade their teaching methods, notes & skills sets
2) Connect themselves to the global information highway that continually upgrades curriculum of study annually…
Harvard Business School does and some more institutions…
3) Radically change mindsets – lecturers are employed for students sake and not otherwise…
I am sure you have heard of departments or faculty where nobody has ever had a first class since beginning
If lecturers are examined – they will fail woefully to be scoring such abysmally low scores…
Should i start taking questions now or give some solutions first ?…
SOLUTIONS…
1) Be skilled in relevant and needed areas in the workplace…
2) Continually upskill yourself so you are relevant beyond the classroom…
3) Identify and solve societal problems…
4) Read and be Educated by what is taking place around you…
The world being a global village – events taking place elsewhere will soon become commonplace in your locality….
Be ready for the changing world that will come by 2024 and 2030
5) Have dignity of labour….
he/she who does not work – should not eat…
Go out , hire yourself to the available jobs, so you can feed yourself – you are gaining experience….
6) Interning ( IT, SIWES, NYSC, Free 3-6 months internships ) that can/ will translate to skill or workplace knowledge that will get you a job with same firm or another…
7) Volunteering with NGOs , so that you can be touching the lives of the weak and vulnerable with empathy and compassion…
You never know
You may just discover a solution to a long lasting problems in society…
8) Become an Entrepreneur out of love and focused dedication, rather than out of frustration….
Thus as you/ your projects grow – you will be an assistance to society in reducing unemployment…
9) Youths must shun the vices of internet fraud , kidnapping, murder for hire and armed robbery…
To embrace hard work that is more sustainable and personally rewarding…
10) Be current…
Do you know what these means??🤷🏼‍♀🤷🏼‍♀
Edutech ?
Agritech ?
MedTech ?
Sustainable Development
Recycling
Robotics
Machine Learning
Renewable Energy
Solar Energy
Smart Cities
Etc…..
I thank you all for your patient attention….
This is were i will drop the anchor for tonight seminar.
